Back to School Special
Okay so I have had quite a few requests and concerns about back to school/college wear. It’s difficult and I have posted about it before but with winter around the corner I thought I’d give some winter looks.
I know it’s winter and it’s gloomy already but a great way to dress (and my favourite way) is in shades of greys and blacks. These suit pretty much anyone of any size because black is a slimming colour and plus you can re-wear certain key items with out it being obvious that you have done so (not like that those bright green jeans that you bought on a trend-whim last school season)
With blacks and greys you’re keeping it simple yet classic. It’s the combination that makes you look perfectly chic without looking like you tried too hard.
Key Items:
Think a good sweater, a decent pair of chelsea boots and dark coloured leggings or jeans.
Trend Items:
This winter is all about furs (faux of course) - unfortunately fur tend to be a tad dressy for school, a great way of incorporating fur is by wearing sheepskin - look for jackets that have a sheepskin collar not only do they look great they are practical as well.
This winter prints such as Aztec or tribal can be used in your accessory pieces - stock up on scarves, beanies and cheap cardigans that use such patterns.
So here are my three favourite back to school casual winter looks.
These items are thanks to general pants, topshop, h&m, miss selfridges, nasty gal and if you decide to go buy them please let them know about WTF and what we are doing
Okay so you have a date, you’re excited, you’re anxious, you’re stressed, you’re running late because you have pulled the entire contents of your wardrobe onto your floor and can’t piece together an outfit to save your life. Let me introduce you to the movie date rule of five.
With this you will become date faultless, immaculately punctual and look effortlessly cool. So in order to get the ‘oh i just threw this all together when you said you’d take me to see the hunger games tonight’ follow the holy five:
1. BLACK JEANS - Jeans are brilliant and comfortable and you can always find a type to fit your size and body shape. I live in my Cheap Mondays and if you haven’t found a brand you love and trust it’s time to work out what label does the best jeans for your body. Very important. A good pair of jeans is what you should be basing the rest of your outfit upon. Black jeans are the best, black is classic yet dressy and jeans are, well, we just went through that. Black Jeans will go with anything so rest assure you wont be desperately trying to match pants with your tops.
2. CARDIGAN
Let’s face it, the cinema always has their air con up way too high! You want to be listening to the movie’s dialogue, not your own teeth chattering away. Always bring a cute cardigan that you can fold up into your bag if you don’t need it anymore.
3. BAG
What you’re going to put all your things in. Perfume, mints, hair clips, makeup etc. A decent sized saddle bag is perfect. My current bag is fringed and black. Your current bag should be medium sized and complimenting to your shoe colour (don’t ask me why but this just always makes outfits look more ‘put together’)
4. ACCESSORIES
This is where you can get creative, however work out what you want your main piece to be. If you have an incredible pair of long gypsy earrings I’m sorry but it’s probably not a great idea to then wear 10 rings and vice versa. Choose pieces that compliment what you’re wearing. If you have a loose or low cut top (which I don’t suggest you do unless you’re looking for some lovin’ or you have small/no boobs) wear some beautiful necklaces that frame your torso. If you are wearing a long sleeve top bring attention to your arms and hands with rings and bracelets. Statement pieces are just that, wear one. However smaller pieces can be layered up and this is the only time I will let you walk out with rings, bracelets and necklaces on - keep them petite otherwise you’re going to look too bling for a film.
5. FLATS - Ladies repeat after me, it is not okay to wear heels to the movies, okay I don’t care how great your new Jeffrey Campbells make your legs look, you are wearing beautiful little flats. Why? Because it is always better to be understated. After all you’re going to watch a film not going out for a night on the town with your girlfriends. Don’t look too dressy, look neat and stylish. Too dressy will look like you tried hard and there is nothing more unappealing than that. Flats are your movie date no fails. You will be comfortable and they look really fucking cute on. My favourite are little ballet pumps but you can dress it up with some on trend sandals or bright colours. Go nuts just don’t go platforms whatever you do!
Above all have fun, don’t worry too much you’ll be in the dark most of the time anyway ;)
PARTY OUTFITS - How to stand out without having it ALL out.
So I have been asked to pull some looks for a birthday party. Parties are easy! A cute dress, a pair of heels and you feel like a million bucks. But what about those signifigant turning of age parties? your 16ths, 18ths and 21st? You want something just that little bit special than your average birthday (after all there are going to be about a thousands photos uploaded the next day)
So how to stand out at a party without showing off too much skin? (remember how many family members will be at these certain parties you don’t want to be giving nana a heartache)
The answer is colour!! Colour works for everyone of any skin tone or personality. It’s just a matter of finding the right colour for you! Redheads aren’t going to look great in the same thing Hispanic girls do! So I’m going to break it down for you. This is a really simplified list (only three skin tones) and doesn’t take into account hair colour and eye colour etc. If you want a more detailed listing why not inbox me!
FAIR SKIN - Dear fair skinned beauties - PLEASE put down the fake tan there is nothing worse than looking like you have been bathing in Fanta, got freckles? BEAUTIFUL! So do some of the most beautiful girls in the world. Embrace it and find inspirations from beauties such as Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey
Fair skins can look really beautiful in whites so why not go the angelic look? Dress up plain white with the use of shimmery pearls and silvers. Remember the angelic look is all about innocence! Wear loose long flowy skirts, peasant styled tops that are dressed up with sequins or beaded detail.
OLIVE SKIN - Olive skin looks beautiful in mermaid shades of turquoise and blues. Embrace this and your style icon Vanessa Hudgens who’s deep olive skin makes this blue dress just pop! Relaxed Boho styles of dresses that are made formal with accessories is a good way to pull off this look.
BROWN SKIN - All my chocolate beauties! Let’s see you in RED! Take the truly fierce and amazing Beyonce as your inspiration. Red looks beautiful when it’s structured. Red is also one of those colours that can easily look tacky if it isn’t done right. Try to keep a tailored look and try to use red in dresses. If the dress is tight on top make sure the skirt is loose and vice versa. Ruffles, off shoulder looks can soften the bust line creating a look of classic femininity.
